Red Clay School Board-District B

School boards are elected trustees who oversee the local school district and represent the community in matters affecting education. In Delaware, school board service is an unpaid position with a term of 5 years. School board elections are nonpartisan, and are held on the second Tuesday in May each year.Seven citizens elected by the residents of the Red Clay Consolidated School District serve as the Board of Education. Collectively they set the direction and develop policy for 29 schools that serve approximately 16,000 students. Each board member lives in a separate nominating area, but serves (and is elected by) the residents at large. Terms are staggered; one or two seats are open each year.

I'm a Red Clay parent, longtime student advocate, and have the experience to make sure our students, families, and educators are being best served by the district.

I served 8 years on the Shortlidge Academy PTA, helped AI Middle School reinstitute their PTA as a parent liaison, and served a year on the Marbrook PTA where my son presently attends the 4th grade. My 4 older children also graduated from Red Clay high schools.

I now manage the Delaware Public Education Ombudsperson Program, which assists students and families to resolve educational disputes.

I have an Associate’s degree in Education, Bachelor’s in Public Administration, Master's in Business Administration, and national board certification in special education advocacy.
Equitable funding. Especially with everything going on at the Federal level, so many of our programs rely on funding. We have to preserve that, and also make sure it's equitable, getting to classrooms and high-needs students, and change our funding formula so that the burden doesn't fall on working families and seniors.
I believe it is important for students to understand the historical and lived experiences of all people, including marginalized groups. It is essential to adopt curricula the diverse perspectives in order to foster an inclusive learning environment. This approach also promotes critical thinking and empathy. By integrating these narratives, we teacher tolerance, acceptance and create a more equitable society, through empowering future generations to celebrate our shared humanity. We should always listen to community issues, but we should not indulge book banning and removing programs that meet this goal.
Ensuring equitable distribution of budgets and resources for high-needs students is essential for fostering an inclusive educational environment. As a school board member, I would employ several strategies to achieve this goal, such as; data driven decision making, equity audits, to include opportunity grant funding and special education apportionments, community engagement, transparent budgeting process and collaboration with our local politicians.

It is not adequate. We need to change the outdated funding formula to make it equitable and support higher-need students.
I think we need to reduce class sizes, increase parent and community engagement, improve teacher support and retention (including competitive salary increases, alternative recruitment pathways, and quality of life benefits), and address the root causes - which oftentimes include poverty, social-emotional learning, and mental and behavioral health support. Equitable funding is also key, because we need to make sure higher needs student get the resources they need to succeed.
