Marion School Capital Outlay Sales Surtax to Improve Safety and the Learning Environment
BALLOT QUESTION: To retain high-quality teachers, reduce classroom overcrowding, and improve safety and security by expanding, constructing, and improving school facilities, with collected revenues shared according to Florida law with eligible public charter schools based on their proportion of total school district enrollment, with oversight by an independent volunteer committee, shall the school district of Marion County levy a one-half cent sales surtax for ten years to fund such activities for Marion County schools?Note: Florida s sales tax rate is 6%, and counties can add an additional 1.5%. Marion County has two initiatives on the ballot. This one, if passed, would add a 0.5% surtax. The second initiative would extend the existing 1.0% surtax for another 20 years. If both passed, sales tax in Marion County would be 7.5%, the maximum allowed by Florida statutes. The sales tax rate in Marion County is currently 7.0%
