Public Policy Priorities As a member of a school board, I am focused on evaluating and supporting the quality of education in our school district. Like many area districts, we face challenges in bringing our ELL students into the mainstream of student progress, We have a grown Special Ed population and need to continue to find ways to deal with the numerous issues that raises while bringing those students into the mainstream of learning progress. Finally our district has long offered outstanding vocational education opportunities and it is important to keep offering these so our graduates are ready to enter the technical demands of the current job market.
Qualifications and Experience I've been on the Board, with the exception of two years, since 2008 and feel I am familiar with not only the issues confronting the district, but also the goals, improvements and staff.
Organization Memberships and Affiliations My outside interestes are in the hobbies of model and real railroads, where I have and am an officer in several groups as well as the sport of horse and carriage competitions where I have been an officer and am an organizer of our major competitions
Endorsements
Community Service Founding president of the Paulden Area Community Organization; for 10 years on the Board of the Friends of the Paulden Library
Occupation Retired City Planner
Education BS in Civil Engineering, University of Arizona; MS in City Planning, University of Arizona
The Board does not implement proposals, but supports those it feels moves the district toward involving our diverse population and students. A major component of that is support and emphasis of our ELL program. In addition, our growing number of student activities, even down to the elementary level, are fostering a far better integration of all our students into our community
The two important are a diverse background (not just in the classroom) and being a good listener. The individual must be able to communicate well his vision and how to implement that vision.
Our board has agreed with the administration to make sure we have sufficient staff and with the special training needed to work with our Special Ed students and this has now broadened to include all grades from pre K to Hight School. On students receiving ESA funds, our board has listened to our attorney and unanimously agreed that students receiving ESA funds are not eligible to play sports in our district. Home schooled and charter schooled students have always been welcomed.
+ Dealing with the effects of the COVID years as the students progress through the grades + Improving math scores, particularly in the pre-high school years + Improving our salary schedules to attract the best of new staff and retaining experienced staff +
Other than the review and approval of textbooks, the Board is not directly involved in curriculum development. However, it would play a secondary role when reviewing testing scores and updates from the Principals.
