I am a lifelong learner. I value learning from others and from sharing my expertise. I value listening to all stakeholders and making informed decisions based on that knowledge.
Our Superintendent must be grounded in the community and understand the challenges we face. He or she must be able to work with all stakeholders and be accessible and listen with an open mind. He or she must have the training and background needed to carry out his/her duties and responsibilities.
In order to answer this question I would need much more information. Without a doubt ESA has a hugely detrimental effect on our public schools. Funding for special education evaluations for ESA students should not be a public school responsibility. As a School Board member, I would make my voice heard in our Az legislature to bring more accountability in voucher appropriations and regulations.
1) the systematic dismantling and defunding of public education, including the push to defeat our override on the November ballot. 2) Providing adequate funding for educators (this word includes all staff who impact our children, from administrators to bus drivers). 3) Preserve programs that durectly impact our students, such as small group instruction and remediation for struggling students, PE, band music, art, drama and other programs that inspire and motivate our youth. The school budget, with its many different funds is complicated. As a fiscal conservative, I feel it is important that we optimize our spending, conserve $ for contingencies, and use experts to help us navigate through our budget requirements.
Our teachers and administrators are the experts. The role of the Board is to listen to the experts, the parents and the community, and to reflect those voices in our curriculum decisions.
