Keeping our community safe by focusing on ways to reduce crime, ensure punishment of violent offenders, and improve rehabilitation. Lowering property taxes by repealing outdated laws and enacting a constitutional funding mechanism for our public schools. Protecting democracy and voting rights by eliminating gerrymandering. Promote development by working in a bi-partisan fashion to complete projects necessary to foster growth of our economy. Improve our public school system by reversing the trend to vouchers and charter schools. Expand broadband access to the entire state by insisting that providers expand coverage areas. Improve our roads to allow easy access to all areas of the district. Repair roads, bridges, and infrastructure.
I fully support the anti-gerrymandering constitutional amendment on the Ohio Ballot as Issue 1 this November. My opponent is against this proposal as he wants to continue the political gamesmanship that frustrates the will of the people of Ohio.
Government should play an active role in economic development. When I served as Law Director for the City of Youngstown, we fostered economic growth in both the private and public sectors with successful projects including Wick Towers, the Doubletree Hotel, the Wells Building, the new Youngstown Municipal Court complex, and the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre. As State Senator, I will work in a bi-partisan fashion with local and state officials to identify needs, develop outstanding projects, and bring them to successful completion.
I want Ohio to comply with the constitutional mandate to provide a system of common (public) schools that provide a thorough and efficient education to every Ohio student. Since 1997, the Ohio legislature has lost its way on issues related to education. That year, the Ohio Supreme Court determined that Ohio's method of school funding was unconstitutional because it relied too heavily on local real estate taxes. To this day, the legislature has not resolved that issue and instead has promoted charter schools, school vouchers, and state takeover of local education to the great detriment of the students and taxpayers of Ohio. I will reverse this trend and reduce property taxes while supporting our public schools.
We need cooperation at all levels of government to meet the needs of our citizens. However, the State should not be involved in banning books from local libraries as proposed by my opponent, or trying to make health care decisions for women as he would like to. Where local officials have specialized knowledge of their communities, they should be able to develop innovative programs so long as they do not conflict with an overriding statewide policy.
The right to quality healthcare should be guaranteed to every citizen of the State. There is room for both private and public insurance in meeting this goal in the most cost-effective and efficient manner.
We need to enforce laws protecting the environment. As Law Director for the City of Youngstown we worked very hard to eliminate the dangers of lead based paint. As a prosecutor, we obtained criminal convictions of polluters who allowed the release of dangerous chemicals into the environment and in addition to other penalties, the court ordered One Million Dollars in restitution to those responsible.
Education, training, and strict enforcement are the keys to preventing discrimination. As a private attorney, I represented victims of discrimination and found that some employers failed to have policies prohibiting discrimination or failed to enforce the polices that were in place. As Law Director for the City of Youngstown, we trained every employee on the city's policies prohibiting discrimination, made sure those policies were available to all in the City's Employee Handbook, and included information on how to file a complaint of discrimination. All complaints were investigated and appropriate actions were taken to rectify any improper conduct that was found to have occurred.
