Currently, Committees established of library staff and various other groups work with the district. I will advocate for additional input from parents from the SIC and PTO representatives to ensure parental input is involved as well.
I believe that every student should be advocated for regardless of the economic status. EVERY school should have the same resources available to ensure every student within each school have the resources available to succeed.
Obviously increasing salaries to attract and retain teachers is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, we can't stop there. Once we get the teachers, we must value them and include them in the decision making processes that affect them and ensure they have whatever resources are necessary for them to adequately teach our students.
SCHOOL SAFETY: We must ensure all schools are safe and secure for our students and staff.

TEACHER SUPPORT: Teachers must have all the resources they need to increase our students’ success. To retain and attract new teachers, we must increase teacher pay and include them in the decision-making process that affects them.

STUDENT SUCCESS: We must provide whatever resources necessary to be successful. We cannot continue to fail them. Some progress just isn’t enough anymore, we MUST get our students to the state mandated guidelines for passing.

MORE TRANSPARENCY: Whether it’s finances or contracts, the District MUST have crystal clear transparency and accountability. We cannot continue to do things the way they have always been done!

Selecting textbooks and school library books is a crucial process that requires careful consideration to ensure that students have access to high-quality and relevant materials. Here are some important factors to consider:

**Curriculum Alignment**: Books should align with the educational standards and curriculum goals of the school or district. **Diversity and Inclusion**: It's essential to select books that reflect a diverse range of perspectives and experiences. **Age Appropriateness**: The content should be suitable for the age and maturity level of the students. **Accuracy and Currency**: Information in textbooks and library books should be accurate and up-to-date, especially in subjects like science and history where new discoveries and perspectives constantly emerge. **Engagement and Readability**: Books should be engaging and well-written to capture students' interest.
1. Listening and Understanding: Begin by actively listening to the students, their families, and teachers to understand the unique challenges and needs they face. 2. Building Partnerships: Collaborate with community organizations, local businesses, and educational institutions to create support networks that provide tutoring, mentorship programs, and extracurricular resources. 3. Resource Allocation: Advocate for fair distribution of resources within the district. 4. Policy Development: Work on developing and implementing policies that promote inclusivity and address systemic barriers. 5. Professional Development: Encourage and support ongoing professional development for educators that focuses on cultural competency, differentiation, and diverse learners strategies. 6. Student Empowerment**: Empower students by involving them in decision-making processes and leadership opportunities.
1.Increased Salaries and Benefits: Offering competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits packages can attract new teachers and retain current ones. 2. Loan Forgiveness Programs: Expanding loan forgiveness programs for educators can alleviate the financial burden of student loans. 3. Professional Development: Providing ongoing professional development opportunities can help teachers feel supported and valued, improving job satisfaction and retention. 4. Mentorship Programs: Establishing strong mentorship programs for new teachers can help them adjust more quickly and feel part of a supportive community. 5. Flexible Credentialing: Streamlining the certification process and offering alternative pathways to becoming a teacher. 6. Improved Working Conditions: Ensuring teachers have access to the resources they need, such as updated technology and sufficient classroom supplies.
My priorities will focus on fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment for all students. I will advocate for a well-rounded curriculum that not only emphasizes academic excellence but also incorporates arts, physical education, and mental health resources. Ensuring that every student has access to the tools they need to succeed is paramount. I will work towards enhancing communication and collaboration between teachers, parents, and the community, recognizing that a strong support network is essential for student success. Prioritizing teacher development and retention will also be key, as our educators are the backbone of our school system. Lastly, I will strive to implement sustainable and innovative practices across the district, ensuring our schools are environmentally responsible and equipped with the latest technology to prepare students for the future.

Qualifications As I seek reelection to Richland One School Board of Commissioners, I am more dedicated than ever to serve the students and families in our district. Our communities, stakeholders and families depend on quality public education. I am committed in my role to ensure that the administration has the support needed to supply educational services to students and families, while ensuring district teachers and staff are provided what they need to educate our kids. We also strive to prioritize safety within the walls of all of our schools and to promote in our communities.
I believe both should continued to be reviewed and selected by educators and district administrators. Extreme viewpoints have no place in student learning and culture because they can have and adverse effect. Students would suffer the consequences such as not learning valuable lessons about history and other important topics.
Our school district has a poverty rate of over 75%. We offer extra-curricular activities and opportunities to join clubs at little or no cost - as where some of our neighboring districts charge astronomical fees for student participation. We also offer financial literacy programs and homeownership programs for students and their families. In addition, we have summer employment in district departments to help improve economic stress during those months
As states grapple with their own challenges with teacher vacancies, I believe each district is doing their best to manage and reduce the number of vacancies. Our district as one of the most diverse in the state, has taken various steps to address this issue, and our rate is continuing to trend downward. We have raised teacher salaries to be competitive with others across the state. Also, our district has implemented initiatives, such as what is called the “Teacher Think Tank” to engage teachers across the district in collaborative discussions on ways to help them engage and educate our students on higher levels. This is a creative way to get teachers’ buy in and for them to feel valued and appreciated.
I support continuing advancements in school safety, specifically, anti-bullying efforts and violence prevention. We have installed metal detectors at all our high schools and are working towards installing them in all middle schools, and I support increasing the number of vape detectors in schools. We have extensive public service announcements (PSA’s) in schools and on social media. We continue to focus on restorative justice to build on positive school culture and climate. I will continue to focus on student achievement, promoting current and future early childhood programs and initiatives. We must ensure the expansion of college and career readiness initiatives and increase student access to those programs to keep students engaged.

Using input from teachers, and parents and, in some cases, possibly students, the school board should consider the options presented by the administration when approving textbooks. The administration should take into account the needs of the students at the local level. Librarians should have some autonomy in selecting library books with consideration to developmentally appropriate guidelines and board approved policies. In all instances, there should be provisions for parental input and opportunities to challenge selections. Whenever possible there should be alternative choices built into the curricula.
As I board member, I will push for a review of policies to ensure that they are consistent with high expectations for every student. District goals set with those policies in mind must represent those high expectations in all of our schools regardless of a student's personal resources or previous experiences. I would then insist that data and input be presented from every school that will demonstrate that there are opportunities and provisions for all students that result in effective instruction and student achievement.
The district needs to be proactive in developing future teachers, in identifying candidates from among high school and student teacher populations. the hiring process should begin as early as possible and be streamlined without endangering the commitment to quality. I will insist that we make sure that our pay schedules and benefit packages are competitive and that we have a strong support system in place for new teachers. Finally, my emphasis will be on selecting school administrators that can develop an atmosphere at each school that supports classroom environments that are safe, nurturing, challenging and effective for both teachers and students. Teachers in such schools tend not to leave and they encourage others to work there.
My top priority is student achievement. First steps would be to review all pertinent data to determine what changes need to be made in the administration in order to promote an atmosphere of collaboration, transparency and efficiency. This is essential in order to get the information we need as board members to set realistic, substantive goals that demonstrate high expectations for every student and support for the schools and teachers in the development of safe, nurturing, challenging and effective classrooms. That requires the the development, recruitment and retention of teachers and administrators the can develop such classrooms.
