Decisions about abortion, like all women's health care choices, belong to the woman, ideally in consultation with medical providers, spiritual advisors, family members, and trusted friends. The government should not interfere in these private decisions.
One of the most significant cost-of-living issues in New Hampshire is the cost of housing, as noted in the next question. I will continue to vote in favor of increasing the state minimum wage. Another area of concern is food insecurity. I have consistently voted in favor of programs to expand school food programs to include breakfast as well as lunch, and make programs available over the summer. One challenge for free and reduced lunch programs is the stigma created by eligibility testing. Making school food free for all students would solve this problem. I am also working with the New Hampshire Food and Agriculture Strategic Plan and will sponsor legislation to help improve New Hampshire's food independence.
I will support legislation to expand the housing supply, ensure that tenants' rights are respected, and provide more state aid to municipalities, including education funding, to reduce property taxes. Ensuring an adequate supply of affordable housing has to be a joint effort between the public sector and the private sector. We need to make sure that laws and regulations, such as zoning ordinances, to not impede responsible housing development. We need to create incentives for more development that focuses on housing that is affordable for our working families.
New Hampshire currently has a very secure election protocol. Recent improvements include automatic, random, post-election audits and replacement of out-dated ballot counting machines. I will resistant any attempt to move away from our current paper ballot system, which works very well. I will work to reverse recent legislation that creates extra red tape for people registering to vote. I would also like to expand opportunities for early voting for people who have difficulty accessing the polls on election day.
One critical area where New Hampshire has been falling behind is energy efficiency and renewable energy production. I support expanding solar and wind generation opportunities, upgrading the grid to enable more distributed energy production, and expanding energy storage capacity. The utilities participate in energy efficiency programs, but these need to be expanded, particularly for rental housing. I have passed legislation that encourages soil health to create more climate resilience. There is room for further incentives for climate resilience and I support further development in this area.
