New Hampshire is currently the only New England state without abortion protections in law, and I will fight to guarantee the right to abortion, ensuring that no future legislature or governor can erode our reproductive freedoms. I strongly believe that all individuals have the right to make their own healthcare choices about their body, and that women in New Hampshire should continue to have access to safe and legal abortions, as well as to contraceptive care and necessary fertility treatments.
I hope to work to address the growing property tax burden in New Hampshire, which especially impacts retirees and those on fixed incomes. I am cosponsoring legislation that would require the state to cover 7.5% of retirement system costs for municipal employees, a responsibility it formally held but that was removed in 2011, leading to higher property taxes across the state.
In the last term, Democrats in the House pushed to add funding to the Affordable Housing Fund and the Housing Champions program. I am very supportive of the voluntary Housing Champion designation and grant program, because it maintains local control while incentivizing communities to create housing-friendly regulations and infrastructure. The program has the potential to reduce costs to developers and create new housing opportunities for workers. Overall, housing is such a pressing issue in this state that it requires cooperation and work from both parties, both the House and Senate, and the Governor’s office.
As a select board member, I see firsthand how hard our election officials and volunteers work to ensure safe, fair, and accurate elections. State law around voting access that is constantly changing for political reasons make the process more confusing and difficult for election officials, and should be avoided as much as possible.
New Hampshire is well behind our neighboring states on developing and enacting a climate plan. A changing climate impacts our tourism, agriculture, and industry, and being forward-thinking in addressing our changing climate should be a top priority in the next term.
