City of Newport Councilor {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

The members of a City Council supervise the city departments, either directly or through a city manager or administrator. City Councilors pass laws, set policy, decide which services will be provided, and develop budgets; they negotiate work contracts and make hiring and firing decisions. A city officer must be a qualified elector under the state constitution who has resided in the city before being elected for a period of time that is specified in the city charter.Newport City Councilors are elected at large. Voters are asked to vote for a number of candidates equal to the number of open seats. They serve for a 4-year term (unless they are filling out a partial term) and are elected on a nonpartisan basis. In most cities, the City Councilors are unpaid.

Newport is a beautiful, vibrant and friendly city that faces the challenges of any community that is home to thriving local industry and also draws many visitors each year. The tension between competing needs of locals and tourists is a wonderful opportunity but also an ongoing challenge. I believe that transparent communication and invitation to residents to actively contribute to the work of the council is the key to success and I would like to see more of this in the coming years. I am also committed to actively work to improve the appearance of the public spaces to make them more attractive and inviting to locals and to visitors.
The opportunity to make a significant contribution to the community that has offered me so many benefits is my chief motivator to run for city council. I believe that stepping up and actively taking part in decisions large and small is a way that I can indulge my deeply-held core value of service to my fellow humans. My campaign theme is "Compassion and Common Sense" and I believe that the city of Newport is poised to become a shining example of a compassionate and effective community. I want to play a central role in that evolution of our city and believe I have a lot to offer in that regard.
I understand that securing our water supply in an environmentally sustainable way is one of the top infrastructure needs for Newport and this will take a relentless and creative effort on the part of the City to seek out funding from a variety of sources to continue to make this a reality. Road quality is another significant challenge and the gas tax recently passed will only address part of that problem. Active lobbying at the state level for registration fees for road maintenance on all vehicles, including electric ones, is a more equitable way of assuring that those who are impacting our roads are paying their fair share.

One of our most urgent needs is to provide clean and safe water by supporting funds to rebuild our Big Creek dams, our only water source. Lobbying efforts are ongoing. Another critical need is to support housing for all economic levels. Adequate and dignified shelter for the most vulnerable is being addressed along with the county and state joint efforts.
I like our non-partisan approach to city issues. There are no Republican potholes and no Democrat water systems. We are all in this together. Your City Council works for the common good.
The most critical, mentioned above, is the replacement of our water reservoir dams. The city continues to partner with state and federal funding. The extension of water and sewer lines, along with streets and sidewalks, need to be developed in order to build more housing where the city does have available land. The City is a partner with state and federal funding to help this happen. I am lobbying to revise the outdated and unfair distribution of the Room Tax. Newport receives only about 30% of tax collected which is restricted and cannot go into street maintenance or updating the Wastewater Treatment Plant, for example. This money could go to support public safety emergency services which is strained by our vital tourist industry.
