What are your top two priorities for this office?

If elected, how will you address these priorities?

Occupation Attorney; Mahoning County Prosecutor
Qualifications for Office: My 24 years as an attorney, including 19 years serving as a Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor, Chief Assistant, and now Prosecutor make me uniquely qualified to continue to serve as the County’s Prosecutor. Over the last 19 years, I prosecuted those who commit violent crimes, worked with and trained our law enforcement partners, and served as counsel to Mahoning County, including the Board of Elections, and all 14 Townships. As County Prosecutor, I manage a staff of 70 employees including 36 lawyers and a nearly 6-million-dollar budget.
Education High School: Niles Mckinley; College: Youngstown State University; Law School: Cleveland State University
My two top priorities are (1) keep our community safe by prosecuting fairly and creating programs to prevent crime and (2) increase transparency and fiscal responsibility of the Prosecutor's Office.
During my first year as Prosecutor, I created a Special Victims Unit to prosecute crimes against our most vulnerable victims, including women and children, the elderly, the developmentally disabled and animals. My team and I regularly meet with local law enforcement and speak to students and citizen groups on crime prevention. We created a county-wide self-defense class, introduced the first ever comfort therapy dog to assist victims, and created the Blue Envelope Program to assist those with disabilities communicate with officers during a traffic stop.

To increase transparency, we publish an annual report and meet with community members across the county through my Town Hall initiative. During my first year as Prosecutor, I reduced expenditures and increased crime prevention and outreach programming by restructuring the office and partnering with community organizations. We also actively seek out new grants and successfully increased alternate funding through grants we have.

Ensure unified preparation of cases with law enforcement and maintain communication with law enforcement after a case is turned over to the Prosecutor. More consistent, aggressive prosecution of violent felonies.
I will implement procedures to improve communication with police to reduce the waste of resources and money. Programs can be used to provide updates and timely notice of proceedings to the police. There currently is a waste of police resources because they aren't advised of the status of a case. Officers appear for hearings that have been continued or cancelled. Or a continuance is needed because the police are not available. Better coordination/communication will reduce last minute disclosure of evidence that results in continuances of court proceedings.

We are wasting taxpayer money and police resources. Last minute pleas after multiple continuances must stop. Violent offenses will not be pled down as frequently as is now occurring. Develop a data base to track plea offers so there are proportional resolutions of similar type cases. It should not matter which courtroom, what prosecutor, how much money someone has, who you know, or what side of town you are from.
