1) Over-development is a huge issue and will be in the future. The county is plagued with commissioners who are not proactive with development; they are reactive. I will be proactive in working with State and local professionals to figure out ways to slow growth and make it harder for big development to build in the beautiful county of Pasco. We are so far behind on infrastructure because of state statutes like the "Live Local Act" that benefit large, rapid development, and the county comp plan isn't beneficial to the people of Pasco, only those who are moving here from out of state. I will fight for Affordable housing and to help the people of Pasco stay in Pasco!
2) AI data centers will be a big issue in the next few years and we need to fight to keep them out of Pasco. I will keep moratoriums in place to restrict any and all AI Data centers from being built until a total ban can be agreed on in Pasco County. I know we need them as a country, but Pasco County and Florida are not the places for these eco-destroying machines.
I will work to stop big developers from coming in and selling cheap housing at 350k plus that none of our current residents can really afford. The average household income in Pasco County is around 50k annually, and we need to work hard to help our current residents stay in Pasco. We need to increase impact fees and possibly impose moratoriums for companies that are looking to build overpriced large developments in Pasco to prevent further inflation and allow the county housing market to stabilize.
I will work with local communities and community development engineers on how to address the many traffic design flaws we currently have. I will work to install lower speeds in high-traffic junction areas and make sure there are clear lines of sight at all intersections, even in smaller communities. Installing retractable speed bumps at high-density intersections will reduce high-collision accidents at traffic lights. These are being effectively used in many European countries and have reduced crash fatality rates. The cost of these can be comparable to a roundabout, depending on the size of the circle, and, more so, the automatic speed bumps are cheaper overall.
Stricter zone change policy. We have many new buildings being built on wetlands that had hundreds, if not thousands of trees in them. They just dig down to the dry ground and remove these ecologically essential trees, which causes the water to escape to other nearby areas after development construction. The retention ponds that are put in place cannot keep up with the amount of water that the wetland previously absorbed and managed. We can also help manage this by planting large native trees with high water absorption in the retention ponds to help prevent future flooding.
I would like to start a plan and put into place a light metro rail system instead of buses. These systems are highly effective in many countries worldwide, along with states in our own country. To cut costs, we can use existing railways along with some new ones. If we can pause or drastically slow down new development, we can focus on roads in many areas that have been neglected for far too long. We need to listen to our community and be smarter and more proactive in road development.
As a county commissioner, I will have limited powers to accomplish this, but I will work to form an official committee that includes school district representatives, county transportation staff, and neighborhood groups. We can meet monthly and discuss how we, as different entities, can help provide safe access to schools for our children.
