VOTE411 Voter Guide

Nevada State Assembly District 40

The Nevada State Assembly is the lower chamber of the state Legislature and works alongside the Senate to draft, debate, and enact state laws. All 42 Assembly seats are up for election in 2026, and the Assembly plays a central role in shaping policy on schools, healthcare, housing, jobs, public safety, and state budgeting. Because Assembly members represent local districts and serve two-year terms, these races allow voters to hold lawmakers closely accountable and ensure that policy priorities reflect the needs and values of their communities. These elections matter for democratic representation and for how the state resolves the biggest challenges facing Nevadans.

Immigration is primarily a federal responsibility, and Washington's failure to secure the border has had real consequences here in Nevada on public safety, schools, hospitals, and our workforce. At the state level, I support ensuring Nevada law enforcement can fully cooperate with federal authorities to remove violent offenders and combat human and drug trafficking. I support strong employment-verification tools so Nevada jobs go to those here legally, and I oppose policies that divert scarce state resources away from the citizens and lawful residents who call Nevada home. We need a legal, orderly system that works for Nevada families and employers, not open borders, and not unfunded mandates on our local communities.
District lines should reflect communities instead of protecting incumbents or punishing political opponents. Nevada's current maps were drawn behind closed doors by one party in power, and voters deserve better. I support moving Nevada toward an independent citizens redistricting commission, similar to models used in other western states, with transparent public hearings, compact and contiguous districts, and respect for county and community-of-interest boundaries. Good-government reforms like this protect every voter's voice, regardless of which party runs Carson City at the time. Having led the Nevada Commission on Ethics, I know that process matters. Fair maps produce a more accountable Legislature and restore trust in the system.
Housing affordability is the single biggest threat to Nevada's future. Young families and working people are being priced out, and here in Carson City our largest export has become the next generation. I would work to expand supply by pushing the federal government to release more of the public land it controls in Nevada for responsible development, streamlining state and local permitting, and cutting duplicative regulations that drive up construction costs, while also protecting local zoning authority from top-down state mandates. Accomplishing this takes real partnership with local governments, the Governor's office, and our federal delegation; that’s exactly the kind of coalition-building my career has prepared me for.
