I believe in extending a helping hand to those facing hardships. Growing up as the child of a teenage mother who often worked double shifts, I experienced firsthand the difference that programs like Medicaid can make in accessing healthcare. I firmly believe that Nikki Haley should have taken the opportunity to expand Medicaid when the federal government was offering substantial support. It's regrettable that over 300,000 South Carolinians were denied access to vital healthcare services due to this decision. I would have voted in favor of expanding access. I also believe in accountability and regular reviews to ensure their effectiveness. Access to high-quality healthcare should be considered a fundamental right for American citizens.
First, I would expand access to technical and career education. Quick trainings/education for in-demand jobs would boost constituents earning potential and create a prepared workforce for industries interested in coming to the region. Second, I would also ensure that Sumter, Kershaw, Lee and Northeast Richland received funding to enhance its infrastructure, utilities, and land for Class A industrial parks. This would allow the region to secure unique and high-paying job opportunites in our region. I would also promote responsible tax incentives and grants to help attract industry to the area. Third, I would support existing businesses. With the right support, small businesses can spur additonal job opportunities right in our community.
First, we have to recognize what an asset our coastal communities are to us. Nature-based tourism and outdoor recreation are essential parts of the South Carolina way of life. Also, rising sea levels threaten our ecosystem in a way that could be dangerous to plant and animal life.
South Carolina should respond with legislation that prioritzies conservation and restoration. As new industry arrives, we should promote a Climate Bill of Rights that underscores our committment to both resposible economic growth and committment to environmental sustain ability. We should also ensure that coastal homes have the proper flood insurance and that there are appopriate natural disaster procedures given the addtl risks assocaited w/ rising sea levels
This is a tough questions because parents want to and should have a say in their child's education. We have to go the mission/vision of the SCDE: "students graduate prepared for success... and citizenship." Students should learn competing ways of thought, engage in critical thinking, and demonstrate the skill of effectively communicating their point of view both written and orally. Books help facilitate this.
In 2024, students have access to books and movies that are way less appropriate than the books on the school library shelf. If there are books that parents don't want their kids to access in the library, then that particular kid, should not be able to check out the book in the library.

I support Medicaid expansion based off the premise that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I have seen firsthand the effects of Medicare expansion being denied to the residence of South Carolina. I support Medicaid expansion with a strong focus on directing the expanded funds to provide health screening and preventative healthcare.
I believe that promoting success among small business owners is paramount for job creation. Businesses with fewer than 20 employees added 25,011 net jobs to the workforce in SC in 2019 (pre-covid). We have to continue to help small businesses owners be the backbone of our economy. Because not only are they the backbone of our economy, they are the heartbeat of South Carolina.
I would like to see South Carolina participate in as many ways as possible (Statewide) to reduce carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases, which are contributing to global warming and rising sea-levels.
The city of Camden made a bold move by eliminating the use of plastic bags. It’s little things like that in small communities that will begin to make a difference. Sumter, on the other hand, has a very poor recycling initiative and is in needs to take steps forward toward improving
