My passion is to rein in big-government and to reduce taxes to reasonable rates. Since my election in 2020, I have helped bring about substantial tax relief in each of the four regular sessions, as well as the special session. Midway through this past session, I was asked to serve as the Chairman of the House Revenue and Taxation Committee. As Chairman, I have a platform to continue to bring taxes down and put more of the peoples’ money where it belongs—in their pockets. I also plan to act as a gate-keeper, preventing government-expanding bills from making it through the pipeline to become law.
My preparation for office began in my formative years, as politics was a frequent topic of discussion around the Cannon family dinner table. My economics education (BYU, 1992) added to my preparation. Studying economics taught me about the benefits and blessings that come from free markets and healthy competition. Law school (University of Utah, 1995) helped prepare me for service in the Idaho House of Representatives, too. I learned a lot about the Constitution, as well as how to analyze laws in law school. My thirty-year career as a lawyer, my thirty-two years of marriage, raising four children, loving six grandchildren and my frequent entrepreneurial adventures all contribute to who I am and play a role in my preparation for office.
Idaho faces a number of pressing issues. Our nation’s broken southern border, and the ramifications of illegal immigration is a huge challenge. Shortages in our work force in many industries that contribute to Idaho’s economy is another. Government bloat/bureaucracy is a third. I believe in freedom. I believe in free markets. I believe in individuals, families and small businesses. I do not have faith in big government programs. I do not believe, in general, in government solving problems. After I am re-elected, I will continue to look for ways that bureaucracy and big-government can be reined in such that people, families and small businesses can find solutions to problems and can thrive.
I am pro-life. I do believe that there are circumstances which justify exceptions to a hard-and-fast, black-and-white policy relative to pregnancy. In general, I am not a fan of criminal liability for physicians who are acting consistent with the idea of doing all they can for a mother whose health is in question. I also am not a fan, in general, of criminal liability for pregnant women who act in a way that is consistent with their own health issues.
I have represented Bingham and Butte Counties in the Idaho House of Representatives since 2020. And, I love it! I feel like my values are very much aligned with the values of the folks that I represent. I believe in limited government; reining in government bloat and excess; and traditional family values. I believe in free markets and equality of opportunity. Freedom, liberty and a belief in people and families and small businesses will create a framework that allows Idaho to thrive.
