City of Marco Island Charter Amendment: Increase salary for elected officials, including a cost of living adjustment

Ballot Language:The City Charter currently provides for salary for all members of the City Council, and has not been adjusted since 1997. Shall the salary for the Chairman be increased from $9,000 to $17,200 per year, and the salary for Councilors be increased from $6,000 to $11,500 per year commencing with the 2026-27 Fiscal Year, and thereafter provide for an annual general wage adjustment equal to the cost of living provided to City employees.Synopsis: In 1997, Marco Island passed a City Charter that provided a salary of $6,000 to city councilors and a salary to the Chairman of $9,000. These amounts have not been adjusted since 1997. No one currently serving on the council will receive these salary adjustments because the increases will commence with the 2026-2027 fiscal year, after the terms for all seven current councilors will have expired. The increases were calculated to adjust the original salary levels for inflation since 1997, updating the salaries to 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars. For the Chairman, the salary will increase from $9,000 to $17,200 and for the Councilors, the salary will increase from $6,000 to $11,500 per year. The ordinance will further provide for an annual general wage adjustment equal to the cost of living adjustments provide to City employees.Source: City of Marco Island Council Meeting video, January 8, 2024A Yes Vote Would:-Authorize an increase, effective in fiscal year 2026-2027, in the salary for the Chairman from $9,000 to $17,200, and the salary for Councilors from $6,000 to $11,500 per year, plus an annual general wage adjustment equal to the cost of living provided to City employees.A No Vote Would:-Retain the current salary levels, as set in 1997.
