I believe the right to choose an abortion should be restored. Arkansas now bans victims of rape & incest, women with nonviable fetuses and serious health conditions from being able to choose an abortion. That's horrible policy. By all means, let's reduce abortions in ways that work-access to birth control, education, economic support, access to healthcare etc.-and I do favor restricting abortion except for cases of the mother's health in the later stages of pregnancy. For the most part though individuals should have the freedom and privacy to make such personal decisions for themselves.
I believe strengthening our economy is like growing a garden: you have to water the roots and tend the soil. In the same way, if you want the economy to be strong, you've got to focus on regular people-poor, working, and middle class. So I support living wages, workers rights, programs that provide stronger economic protections than we have now, and fixing our unfair, regressive tax code in Arkansas.
I grew up with guns so I know they serve a purpose-self defense, hunting, and it's okay to enjoy a little target practice. But when I was growing up we valued people more than our guns and had good sense about them. We need to get back to that. So I'll support policies like improved background checks and stronger measures to keep people who have shown themselves to be dangerous from getting their hands on one to make our communities safer. We also need more interventions for young people at risk for becoming perpetrators of gun violence.
Arkansas has the lowest voter turnout in the nation and that should tell us something is wrong with what we're doing. However, our state government continues to throw up barriers to our citizens exercising our most important and sacred right. For example, the state recently barred voter registrations that use E-signatures, something that helps people with certain disabilities register. This year, I used an E-signature to apply for a life insurance policy and we use them in all kinds of other ways, so we ought to be able to handle registering to vote in that same, modern manner.
Climate change is real, it's being driven by certain types of pollution we create, and it's causing real harm. It's past time for certain politicians to get their heads out of the sand about that. The good news is that not only can we address the problem but the ways we can do so will actually create jobs, improve our quality of life, and strengthen our economy. We do that by investing in clean, home grown, never ending energy like wind and solar, building the infrastructure to support electric vehicles, and planting more trees to capture some of that carbon pollution. Arkansas also has the ability to produce the lithium needed to enable much of that progress so it's a big economic opportunity for our state.
