I believe that is a choice best made by a woman, in consultation with her healthcare provider and her faith. In Arkansas, we have a total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. That's a radical ban that is causing untold harm in Arkansas, today. I support repealing that ban and ensuring that women and girls who are raped in Arkansas are not forced to carry their rapist's child to term.
In Northwest Arkansas, the housing affordability issue is partially a housing supply issue and partially an inflation-induced issue, as the costs of new construction have skyrocketed. I support local rezoning efforts that will allow builders and developers to increase housing stock of all kinds in our Rogers community. We also know that in the last four years, as prices at the grocery store have inflated, some retailers and corporations have raked in record profits. We need to hold these corporations responsible for the relationship between our country's historic inflation numbers and our corporations' historic profits.
I support closing the background check loophole, and guaranteeing that every gun transaction (private or otherwise) is accompanied by a background check. I support educating families about safe storage and decreasing the numbers of firearms that are stolen from homes and vehicles. I support either tax credits or vouchers for those who purchase gun locks or gun safes, to the end of safe storage. There are too many tragic stories in our state of small children or teenagers who get their hands on a firearm - we can implement smart policy that decreases the number of tragic stories.
I love that we have two weeks of early voting in Arkansas, including Saturdays. I'd support expanding that to a full month of early voting. We need more election resources translated into Spanish, and our state needs to hire more Spanish-speaking poll workers. Our elections are too partisan - our election commissioners shouldn't be partisan figures, but they are. The people who count the votes shouldn't be representatives of one political party or another. We must also prosecute instances of voter intimidation at polling places.
In Northwest Arkansas, we are seeing more and more extreme weather events - they're becoming regular - and this trend is already damaging our local housing market, our local economy, and our infrastructure. The climate crisis is here, not off in the future. We need more efforts in our state to preserve urban forests and increase carbon sequestration. We need to ensure vast state and local investment in alternative energy, like solar. Practically, we need massive investments in NWA in stormwater draining and flooding mitigation. We have wonderful corporate stakeholders in NWA who want to be part of the solution - we just need more policymakers who believe that there actually is a climate problem to solve.
