We need to invest in high-quality education and teaching strategies that meet the needs of families, students, and educators. As part of this, we need to look at the whole spectrum from cradle to career. The earlier we invest in our people, from pregnancy and early childhood, the greater the return on investment, stronger families, and multi-generational outcomes. At the same time, we need to support our teachers and give them the tools to provide high quality education for all students. This means reducing class sizes, preventing cuts in essential services, ensuring that the state budget reflects current service levels, and making sure we have strong recruitment and retention efforts for our workforce.
With the rising costs of living and rent, I know how hard it is for families to have safe and stable housing. I believe that this is a complex, multi-faceted issue that will take years to plan, build, and preserve existing affordable housing units. We need more access to temporary transitional housing that will shelter individuals experiencing homelessness and provide key wraparound services, including things like substance use treatment, counseling, and community support. We also need to expand our affordable housing inventory across the state. This means responsible city planning, building up key infrastructure like water and power, while creating climate resilient communities.
After-school and summer programs have been instrumental with helping kids develop their social, emotional learning, career development, and providing kids with the resources to build life-long skills. Summer learning programs are essential to lifting up our historically underserved students. We need stable and consistent long-term funding solutions so that schools can plan adequately in advance. This is why I believe we must collaborate with school districts, community-based organizations, and educators on how we can achieve stable funding. I voted in support of the Summer Learning bill which also requires the Department of Education to study and propose recommendations. I look forward to reading this report.
