Housing is a top priority for me as someone who represents the North Coast. I worked hard on passing a bill that cut unnecessary red tape when a city wants to convert industrial land into affordable housing (HB 3442). I sponsored and voted for a bill (HB 3414) that would have cut lots of red tape in Oregon land use laws. This law would have made it easier for cities to expand and build more housing if they demonstrated a need for it something that coastal cities are desperate for. Unfortunately, Democrats killed that bill. I will look to support other efforts to bring much-needed reforms to Oregon's land use laws so that we are able to increase the supply of all types of housing.
Oregon ranks near last nationally for education quality. Parents know what educational environment works best for their children. Whether public, charter, private or virtual charter school I fully support tax dollars following each child to the learning environment that works best for them. We must also support teachers by paying them what they deserve. I'm proud to have voted for a historically high education budget that would have increased teacher pay.
As a small business owner, I understand the struggle working families are going through right now. I'm proud to say that I didn't vote for a tax increase in my first term. I'm proud to have sponsored and introduced bills that would have reduced the tax burdens for all Oregonians including HB 2724 which would have repealed the death tax, and HB 2556 which adjusted income tax brackets increasing the standard deduction and giving much-needed financial relief for working-class families.
