Homelessness is a top priority for me. I don't think our politicians fully understood the full impact Measure 110 would have in exacerbating the homelessness crisis. As a pastor, I have walked with people through the struggles of addiction. I'm encouraged by the Legislature's move to recriminalize drugs with the purpose of getting people into treatment. But we have more work to do. We need an all hands on deck approach to our drug crisis, unfortunately, many times the faith community gets excluded from funding to help people get clean and sober. Homelessness is also a housing issue. I work in the construction industry and have seen first hand how government regulations make it more expensive to build homes at an affordable cost.
Parents know what is best for their kids and the government should be empowering them to take an active role in their education. Giving families the freedom to choose the best educational environment for their children would help children succeed. The legislature should also immediately reinstate graduation standards and provide support to help students meet that standard.
More people are moving out of Oregon than are coming here. That's bad for our workforce and bad for our economy. We need to ensure that working families have hope of a better life - hope that if they work hard they can move up on the income ladder. They can't move up the income ladder if businesses that provide jobs leave. We must reverse the trend of overtaxing and over regulating businesses to the point where they pack up shop and leave. We also must stop passing costly mandates that increase utility bills. Major utilities are raising their rates to comply with green energy mandates that make power come from more costly and less efficient and reliable forms of energy. These costs just get passed down to Oregonians.
