The Central Committee is a Political Body- not a governmental body. The CC meets one time, to participate in post primary party reorganization, which includes selecting party officers. Its members then become members of the Party Executive Committee, along with appointed members and those that obtain membership through the position they hold. The Exec Committee is the party governing body. Its most important function is to create a structure where Democrats can be successful. The Exec Committee meets 4 times per year- 16 times in a given term. Typically, only two of those meetings are to consider candidate endorsements. While endorsements are an important function, that’s not everything. Sustaining a Strong State Party on an ongoing basis is what we must do to achieve success.
This position isn’t about electing someone to put priorities/ ideas forward per se. The structure isn’t in place for that to happen. The Party Chair sets the agenda. Candidates and campaigns set their policy priorities. The role of a member is to actively and enthusiastically support the party and its candidates and campaigns. My priority is to do exactly that; as I have done for the entirety of my 9 year tenure on the ODP CC/Exec Committee- and for many years before I served. I pledge to attend every Committee meeting to stay informed and to attend Democratic events so that I can stay in touch with Democratic voters.
The first step in promoting voter participation is to ensure that eligible voters are registered to vote and have updated their registration if necessary. I currently am working with my county party to plan Voter Registration events. I personally register my family, friends and neighbors as they become eligible or have a change in status. In the weeks leading up to an election, I frequently share information and applications for early/ absentee voting. I post daily reminders about voting and elections during Early Vote and on Election Day. I share the Early Vote Hours Schedule. For this Primary Election, I am educating voters on the reasons why participation in a Primary Election is important.
