As a commissioner, funding 8 other elected officials, 11 of our own departments and 7 judges is the most challenging.
The challenge is finding a balance between limited resources and growing demands. We have to be able to navigate economic uncertainties, rising costs, and political pressures while ensuring that essential services and unfunded mandates are maintained. Making tough choices about where to allocate funds, finding new revenue sources, and having the foresight for long-term financial planning are key to overcoming these challenges.
Economic Development, Job Growth and Location are among the top significant opportunities in the county. Portage has a strong manufacturing base and is well situated within 45 minutes to Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown and Canton. Portage has plenty of opportunities to expand, locate and grow a business.
The top constraints will be budgetary constraints, childcare, affordable, quality housing, workforce skill gap and aging infrastructure.
I support land-use policies that protect farmland and natural spaces that ensure these resources are preserved for future generations.
I support policies that strengthen reduction of pollution in local water bodies and encourage water conservation.
Portage is very fortunate in that it has several organizations that educate on both topics and many other topics from youth to adults to protect our environment.
The increasing cost and limited supply of housing presents significant challenges to those looking to relocate, stay and grow in Portage County. Housing is an increasing challenge to workforce development. I would support public and private partnerships to increase housing and incentives to do so. I am currently working on bringing in experts for a discussion on collaborative solutions for Ohio's housing crisis. The program will be focused on finding opportunities and overcoming the barriers for incentivizing housing development in northeast Ohio.
