City Council focuses on the long-range vision for the community, establishing policies that affect the overall operation of the city. City councils have a broad range of duties and responsibilities, primarily acting as the local legislative body and overseeing various aspects of city government. They are responsible for enacting laws, approving budgets, setting tax rates, and overseeing city services and departments. City councils also represent constituents, engage in planning and zoning, and may oversee the hiring and firing of city employees.City Councilors attend one monthly committee meeting and two legislative meetings most months. Those meetings are held in the evenings. Each Council member is chair of a standing Council committee. They are also a member of two other committees. Additionally, they may be appointed to represent Council on other boards.
