I am a former special education teacher and also a business owner. Both occupations have helped prepared me for my role as mayor. The experience of working in the second largest school district in Michigan and working through bureaucracy to working in our small business and having to be nimble as an entrepreneur have come in handy while serving the people of Mount Clemens.
Mount Clemens' aging infrastructure and lack of stable revenue is our largest issues. We have addressed the lack of revenue in two ways. First by bringing in 79 million dollars of grants in the past 3 years for major infrastructure project. The second, by a robust economic development effort to bring new businesses to Mount Clemens. We also look for ways to change legislation at the state level to address the non-taxable property laws that cripple Mount Clemens and deem 48% of our land non-taxable.
Mount Clemens needs additional housing in the downtown area so we have more daily users of our downtown. We need to continue to take non-taxable properties and return them to the tax rolls.
In terms of Downtown, many people would like to see further restaurants, a small hotel, more boutique shops, and an ice cream shop!
The number one infrastructure issue in Mount Clemens is the decommissioning of our Water Filtration Plant and the connection to the Great Lakes Water Authority. This 37 million dollar project is breaking ground next month and must be successful for the sake of residents and businesses. This is an issue of clean, safe drinking water and therefore a public safety issue as well.
