I have a strong understanding of state law and some federal laws based upon my studies as well my interaction with the court systems on various levels. In addition to my volunteer work with LANWT. I have been a licensed and ordained minister for 30 years thereby equipping me to perform marriages.
Because this court is based in the community, I will look at ways to bring clarity to what the court does which includes educational training/seminars for the community thereby insuring they understand why they have been assigned to the court. I will be kind, compassionate and openminded while administering the law ethically and fairly. I will also connect with other community partners to offer solutions to fines/judgements.
I will seek out opportunities to work with local colleges and universities to utilize interns that have an interest in the law/criminal justice as possible work study to help with caseloads. I will institute a system of first in first out, if at all possible, with a reminder put in place to check the statuses of all pending cases at least every 2 weeks, this will be put in place the minute the file hits the system. I will organize the system by causes, i.e. tickets, evictions, small claims, truancy, etc.
As with any interaction with the judicial system, there is apprehension, fear and a lack of trust. I would assure the people that while the role of the JP is to administer the law, I am willing to listen compassionately, to offer solutions if possible to avoid fines/judgements, to ALWAYS act ethically and respectfully. I will expect the same thing in return and work diligently to make sure that a temporary aberration doesn't become a permanent 'situation unless it is warranted.
