Current housing has not kept pace with projected population growth. Supply and demand imbalance. Housing availability and affordability impact, medium gross rent significant increase since 2020; an increase for one and two-bedroom units. Renters are rent burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs. Housing availability and affordability is challenging. Increased efforts to provide missing middle housing, homes that are missing from the modern housing market, smaller footprint, in walkable neighborhoods, near transit, employment, retail. Duplexes, townhouses, ADUs.
The need to balance development with community priorities is challenging. The Comprehensive Plan will guide community development through the city planning process for the next 10 years. District 20 residents actively engaged in the Southwest Area Plan. Extensive public engagement throughout the process was critically important to achieve the need for development vs other concerns. The draft of the SW Area Plan is currently being reviewed by the city's boards, committees and commissions and is the vehicle to determine how the city will balance the need for development with the other concerns.
Top priorities for District 20:
1. Housing Affordability
2. Speeding & Traffic Safety
3. It’s Time. BWCs for MPD. Build trust, visible oversight.
Consistent public engagement is critical to achieving engaged neighborhoods. How I would address them:
1. Identify and engage constituents, especially neighborhood associations, underrepresented groups and businesses.
2. Communication, build trust and create safe gathering spaces for people .
3. Alder blogs to disseminate information.
4. Partnership with other community organizations and stakeholders.
5. Provide opportunities for feedback.
I am an experienced community organizer, first elected in 2015, one of the first two African American females elected Alder to Madison Common Council. The staggered term for Alders began in 2025, as District 20 Alder I am completing a one year term. I am seeking re-election April 7, 2026, I am motivated to run because of unfinished business within District 20. Taking seriously the Passing on of the Baton, building relationships, and serving constituents. The Council can be a challenging environment to navigate. We have challenging times ahead. I extended the baton. District 20 needs a partner who will lean into challenges, moving the district forward. I am committed and if re-elected will continue to serve with that goal.
