Madison is making progress through the Housing Forward initiative, but we are still trailing demand. Our efforts have a strong foundation, yet we must move faster. In District 18, I spearheaded a new Tax Incremental District (TID) to bridge the gap for workforce housing. We need to support affordable homeownership so residents can build wealth, not just rent. We also need to prioritize community land trusts for permanent affordability and streamline our approval process. Equity means ensuring those who power our city can afford to live here.
Balancing growth requires an equity first approach to planning. In District 18, I advocate for synchronized development where infrastructure like transit and mixed use is prioritized alongside new buildings to ensure public safety. We must use tools like the Northside TID to fund traffic calming and improvements that protect pedestrians. Conservation is equally vital; I support protecting our wetlands and green spaces as we expand. By centering residents and established community groups in the process, we ensure growth respects our history and natural assets rather than displacing them.
For my constituents in District 18, the priorities are clear: safety, housing stability, and economic opportunity. They want a Northside that feels connected to the rest of the city but retains its unique neighborhood character. I am focused on proactive violence prevention and traffic safety. I recently worked with Traffic Engineering following a tragic local incident to implement infrastructure changes that protect pedestrians and bikers. I believe safety comes from community empowerment, not just enforcement. I am pushing for inclusive economic development, and the “missing middle” housing.
My life and career in Madison have been dedicated to bridging the gap between individuals and local government. As the former Director of Just Bakery, I spent over a decade helping marginalized residents overcome systemic barriers to employment and economic stability. In my most recent work with Public Health Madison & Dane County, my occupational experience allows me to address safety as a matter of public health, focusing on proactive intervention and community empowerment. My skills are quite versatile, and I bring my authentic lived experience to every decision I make as alder of District 18.
