The city continues to liberalize our zoning laws and provide funding for affordable housing. For the 2026 budget, we approved over $14 million for affordable housing. This demonstrates our continued commitment to lower housing prices by increasing the supply of housing and by directly creating units for low-income households.
These are not necessarily in conflict. We can take a smart approach to planning that allows for us to build much needed units while making sure that we have the resources available to meet current and future resident needs. I would also focus on changes to our planning laws to allow buildings with fewer parking spaces, that are near transit, to be built easier. That will help reduce traffic and make our city more livable.
The top priorities for my constituents are affordable housing, street safety, and sustainability. I would address affordable housing by building more housing and by increasing the size of the affordable housing fund. I will prioritize street safety by ensuring that our Downtown Plan has dedicated off-street bicycle facilities, improved pedestrian crossings, and other infrastructure improvements. I would focus on sustainability by promoting programs such as the efficiency navigator, which help property owners get free assistance for energy efficiency improvements.
