The city is actively pursuing ways to increase affordable housing in Middleton. We have created an action plan to coincide with closing TID District 3 this year with clear steps to create affordable housing and help residents maintain their current homes and apartments if they are struggling with costs and rents. I fully supported the extension of TID 3 to make sure funds were available for this plan and support the efforts to draft and execute that plan. We also recently updated our zoning ordinance to allow for more creative ways to add different types of affordable housing.
Development needs to include solutions for the increased demands for city services that arise alongside it. The costs for those increased services need to be addressed when the development is proposed and the city currently has standards in place to look at safety, traffic analysis and conservation of natural areas. Our planning department has done a good job of looking at the big picture when working with developers and finding ways to allow new development into the city without overwhelming the services needed.
The Community Campus redevelopment would meet the need for increased spaces for our Library and Senior Center, as well as the need for improved workspaces for city staff. Our current buildings are aging and have increased costs for continued repairs. New facilities would save money in the long run, as well as provide shared community space for residents, either as ways to build connections within the community or in case of emergency needs. Our financial officer has proposed ways to fund the redevelopment by retiring other debt early and using additional funding from the TID 3 closure.
My constituents' top priorities tend to center around traffic safety and public works and I try to connect them with city staff and act as a liaison to help them find solutions to the problems they are facing. When I knock on doors, many are happy with the services the city provides and with the quality of our parks and conservancy lands. They want to see our quality of life maintained and that is what I keep in mind on council, while looking at long-term, city-wide solutions so that all residents of Middleton have the same level of quality of life.
