As the elected part of our school system, we are answerable to the citizens of Brookfield and Elm Grove. This includes adults and children, parents and non-parents, whether or not they are taxpayers. We are responsible for the effective stewardship of the school system, financial management, and the safety of those in our care.
The issue of technology (Eg. cell phones and Apple Watches) must be addressed. We must strike a balance between appropriate use of technology and the proven damage that these distracting devices are having on our children.
A referendum is currently in development by the current board. I have toured all of the facilities which would be affected by the requested funding. It is clear to me that some improvements are essential, though perhaps not all. I believe the plan for Tonawanda may actually be too modest. I greatly prefer upgrading existing facilities rather than tearing down and building new facilities.
I assume “education professionals “ refers to teachers. I am a proponent of involving teachers in curriculum development, since they are the ones who will deliver the content. Note my answer above concerning technology issues. This is a mental health issue that will require a comprehensive response.
On my facility tours I have asked the guides (principals and teachers) about this issue. They were pleased with the present safeguards, such as cameras, locked doors, alarms on open doors. It must also be admitted that no system can prevent a truly deranged individual, but our systems might slow him down enough for a police response.
