I love the Town of Onalaska and will work hard to help keep it a wonderful place to live and work. I moved from the City of Onalaska to Brice Prairie with my family in 2005 and I’ve followed Town of Onalaska business the past few years. As a former educator, I am a good listener, collaborator, researcher, problem-solver, and decision-maker. When I retired in 2020, I was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for serving over 20 years on my professional board and for positively impacting my field. If elected, I will bring my enthusiasm, honed skills, and commitment to the Town Board. Finally, I am currently the interim seat holder for the Supervisor 2 position that I am running for.
Whether the issue is railroad crossings, potential annexation, or Airbnb’s, I will have the following priorities when making decisions.
1. Enhance our neighborhoods. Neighborhoods should be inviting, peaceful and safe for all residents. For example, I will work to ensure that residents have safe and easy access to enter and leave Brice Prairie as we work with the railroad and the federal government on railroad crossings.
2. Protect Natural Resources: Our water, air, and soil are particularly sensitive because our Town includes part of the Upper Mississippi Wildlife Refuge. I will work to protect our beautiful natural environment while supporting recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, boating, paddling, and biking.
3. Encourage Community Engagement: Local government should be more accessible so busy residents can stay informed and communicate their views.
Before voting on major decisions, I will ask Town residents how various outcomes could impact their neighborhoods, research the environmental impact of various decisions, and encourage the Town Board to find meaningful ways to engage residents with Town Hall meetings, flyers and newspaper articles when possible. When needed during Town meetings, I will ask clarifying questions so attendees can have a fuller understanding of the issue at hand. I will be visible in the community by attending events. Finally, I am happy to answer questions at BettyDeBoerCandidate@gmail.com between now and April 1. If elected, I will respond to emails at my new town board address quickly.
