We must continue to find cost-savings by continuing to examine all existing contracts. The Dane County budget should support the needs of District 20 while not overburdening taxpayers, We have to ensure the county budget provides the quality services we expect to keep our community safe and help those who need help, which may necesitate delaying projects that aren’t essential or don’t contribute to the tax base in the near term. Explore more strategic alliances between the private sector and government that increase our tax revenue base, like the Alluant Center project.
To increase affordable housing, we need to build more moderately priced homes & have zoning that allows more density in some areas, while still protecting greenspace. I support making it easier to finance & use modular & manufactured homes-a friend has one & it’s beautiful & more affordable. We can continue to build on growth plans that are already in place in Dist20. While Dist20’s unhoused population is small, I was raised to believe we must help those less fortunate. I’d like to see even more alliances between businesses and nonprofits. Costco’s Feeding America is a great example of this.
My top priority is protecting our water, nature, wetlands & farmlands and preserving the unique identity of our communities. One of the greatest threats currently to this is data centers. With the AI explosion, data centers will require an unsustainable amount of land, resources and will increase everyone’s energy bill. I believe this will require rapid innovation to meet the demand and data centers in their current form will quickly become obsolete. We should slow down, evaluate carefully to ensure we are not sacrificing irreplaceable farmland and resources for a promise of short term gains.
We moved to Windsor 25+ yrs ago to raise our 3 daughters in Wisconsin. For over 16yrs, I’ve been a member of the Token Creek Conservancy Committee. We help manage the lands & waters of the Token Creek Conservancy. For 10+yrs, I’ve done stream monitoring for the Rock River Coalition. I collect & test samples from the Token Creek which aids water management decisons in the county. I am also an election worker for Windsor. After almost 40yrs, I retired from United Airlines as a Pilot-I was an international wide-body Captain for 25+yrs. I was a Pilot/Aircraft Commander in the US AirForce, flying C141s for the 702nd Military Airlift Squadron. Worked as a Software Engineer mostly military contracts. Dane County has a spending problem and we can easily make up any budget shortfalls by simply prioritizing our needs over our wants. My opponent is backed by County Board members who voted to cut millions from the Sherriff's office while still approving discretionary spending like the recent $1M gift to the City of Fitchburg for a new teen center or the $2M gift to the Ho Chunk Historical Center. While these special projects are nice, they don't benefit all of Dane County, and they should not be prioritized over core services and public safety. I will always vote to protect public safety.
Dane County has authorized tens of millions of dollars for affordable housing in recent years, yet the dream of home ownership for a first time home buyer has never been more bleak. To solve this problem Dane County needs to look itself in the mirror and ask how we are contributing to the high cost of home ownership. My opponent is backed by County Board members who to voted to raise property taxes and fees for new construction. These are costs that are simply passed on to the consumer and only add to the overall problem of affordability.
Many career politicians have used their position on the County Board to launch bigger political careers. Many state and federal politicians got their start on the Dane County Board. They did this largely by passing the buck on tough decisions and only focusing on the easy and exciting issues while ignoring the basics and fundamentals of county government. The top priority of the board should be to serve and protect the public. This is often times monotonous and hard, but it needs to be done. Ensuring the basics are being done and done well should be our focus for the next several years.
The citizens of the 20th district have elected me three times to serve them on the County Board. They know that I am not a rubber stamp and that I will stand up to the special interests in Madison. I will continue coming to meetings with questions and curiosity to ensure the taxpayers are getting the best outcome possible from their government. This hasn't always made me popular in Madison with the ruling class, but I know the taxpayers appreciate someone who is willing to ask the tough questions on their behalf. As long as I'm serving on the County Board I will continue to be an advocate for public safety and the taxpayer.
