It is going to take all sorts of tools and approaches to close the budget gap this year. We have to exhaust every possible efficiency, such as consolidating functions and coordinating across departments where possible. It will be important to evaluate the criticality of non-mandated services and look for program redundancies. We also have to look for opportunities to expand outside revenue from grants and state funding. There is no doubt we are going to have to get creative beyond this, but these are a few actions that will be explored.
The affordability problem is primarily a function of too little supply. We need more development, higher density, missing-middle housing, and more apartments. Dane County is doing the right thing with the Affordable Housing Development Fund and providing support for the Madison Area Community Land Trust, and I support continuing those capital investments. The city of Madison also deserves credit for relaxing density restrictions, especially along transit corridors, because increased density helps balance development with conservation. This is the path to sustainable affordability.
My constituents consistently raise four priorities: affordable housing, avoiding tax increases, water quality, and conservation. Addressing housing affordability means supporting policies that increase supply while maintaining investments like the Affordable Housing Development Fund. We must also focus on efficiency and prioritizing core services to limit tax impacts. Protecting clean water through phosphorus reduction, watershed partnerships, and conservation of natural areas and wetlands remains essential to long-term sustainability.
I am serving my first term as a Dane County Supervisor, where I have developed a strong understanding of county services and the importance of collaboration to move policy forward. I hold a degree in environmental economics, which informs my approach to conservation and responsible economic development. Professionally, I work in supply chain management, focusing on efficiency and long-term planning; experience that translates directly to evaluating programs and making thoughtful policy decisions. I have also built strong working relationships with county staff and fellow supervisors. County staff bring institutional knowledge and professional expertise to their work, and partnering with them is essential to turning priorities into results.
