There is no one budget line, decision, or process that provides an obvious solution to our deficit. One unfilled opportunity for solution-finding entails commencing the process earlier in our annual cycle, identifying the array of significant cost drivers outside of departmental reviews, and include relevant stakeholders to examine those cost drivers outside of the whole department's review.
The County Board has made it policy over several electoral cycles to pursue a creative range of options where housing quality, access and affordability is concerned. To further enhance those efforts, we need to identify how to support physical improvements that provide appropriate, safe access to identified dwellings for those with limited mobility; increase emergency shelter capacity, especially when weather threatens life and limb; and identify available opportunities to strengthen the delivery of housing and related services through the use of our Sequential Intercept Model Mapping effort.
District 13 constituents often note housing, the climate crisis, and access to community mental health resources as top concerns. In each of these areas, I have sought to preserve budget lines and pursue opportunities for expansion. One such example is in the expansion of Medicaid-funded Comprehensive Community Services (CCS) position in the Department of Human Services.
My background as an academic and union organizer provides me with valuable experience to address identified priorities. This includes a unique attunement to the needs of students, especially the struggles that pressure educational attainment, like housing; working with public budgets and establishing worker pay; health insurance dynamics; and, generally, the ability to structure public participation in community decision-making.
