To address the projected 2027 budget deficit, the county must continue to look for existing cost-saving and revenue options. This might mean pursuing operations efficiencies through consolidation, shared service agreements, and streamlining organizational structures. We must also work to maximize outside revenues such as state aid and grants while exploring alternative funding models. My priorities will be twofold, ensuring that any reductions to non-mandated services are carefully evaluated for their impact to the community and that county employee positions and benefits are protected.
Dane County must continue investing in affordable housing and preserving existing units. On the County Board, I worked to increase affordability period for projects funded through the DCAHDF to 40 years and supported amendments prioritizing permanently affordable housing including investments in the land trust. Supporting a total of $30 million of investments in affordabile housing. Over my next term, I will continue advancing policies that expand housing supply, protect affordability, and promote housing stability, including for residents experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Top priorities my constituents have for the county board is the creation of affordable housing. The Dane County Affordable Housing Development Fund continues to allow many new affordable units to be brought online, and we must continue this funding. The environment is also a pressing issue, working to restore the lakes and watersheds of the county will be a top priority. Expanding the CARES to create a mental health-focused alternatives to police responses. I also hope to prioritize mobility through expanding bike routes and fighting for other public transportation solutions.
As a student and community member, I am uniquely able to understand and address the needs of District 5, which contains large portions of the UW-Madison campus. Having served on community boards and commissions, I have the experience to know both how to build compassionate community connections and translate these community needs to county policy. Beyond that, as a student of both social psychology and political science, I have the tools to approach county policy with an evidence-based perspective.
