We have a roadmap: a "3-5 Year Strategic Plan." On its own, a strategic plan is wonkish and abstract, but it does help us stay on track with monitoring and improving our educational program and work environment. Achievement improves when every student receives a strong universal curriculum and the individualized supports that they need. We are progressively becoming more data-driven and faster-responding in our adjustments. Working with instructional coaches, professional development programs, and external support resources, our educators are constantly learning, as well.
Safety is a broad topic, as are the responses. Thanks to community support, building entrance safety improvements will be completed in 2026; concurrently, current resources have been reviewed and maintained, and practices have improved. We have an effective relationship with a school resource officer. School counseling and psychologist services are utilized. Positive culture is modeled in student organizations such as the elementary "Kindness Club," the MS & HS Cardinal Crew, numerous orgs, and our supportive staff. The board sets high standards and supports restorative practices.
We are on a relatively stable trajectory in the near-term, but annual review is a duty of the administration with board guidance. For a small school, we have a diverse range of programs. We remain open to cooperative programs and collaborative staffing with other districts when it is in the best interest of students. Demographics/ changes in family size are not the only drivers of enrollment. When we make enrollment in Marshall Public Schools the compelling choice in a sea of charter and open-enrollment options, the enrollment trends are stabilized.
Our main job is helping every student maximize the benefit of being a Marshall student. I am always ready to review data, ask questions, and push for more.
I am a 24-year Marshall resident, the father of two high-achieving Marshall graduates, an active community volunteer (Maunesha River Alliance, Scouting, Waterloo City Band), and a supporter of Marshall public schools. I am completing my sixth year as a board member, and am currently vice president of the Marshall board, the CESA board of control, and the JEDI virtual public charter board. I am also the product of small-town public education (Harmony, Minnesota) and love the opportunities to do everything that a small district offers its students.
