We’re taking steps to close gaps and are seeing success in some areas. There are others we need to work on. Building leaders have been focusing on creating, protecting, and using small group time effectively. They’re seeing success with this approach since it allows time to re-teach if necessary and centers the students’ needs. They’ve indicated the small group time plus a focus on routines for efficiency and good foundational knowledge are paying off. Since staff are seeing success with these current methods and the numbers are improving, I’d like to give them the space to continue.
I’m not sure we have a good tool at the moment to gauge this. The addition of an SRO this year was well-received and was one response to help the school community feel safer. We’re gathering data about the program and should have a better read on this at the end of the year. The Stoughton school board identified “belonging” as one our three goals. This year we are using existing tools plus attendance and participation in extra-curriculars as a starting point to gauge belonging and climate. We will be able to synthesize these data sources this spring.
My position is the same as last year. Enrollment, and with it, funding, have been declining for a while and will continue to do so based on current forecasting. Before adding new positions, programs, or services we would need to identify funding sources to ensure we can invest in the new endeavors' success. Before making adjustments, we audit existing spending and evaluate whether our costs for things like administration are proportionate to the student population. Administrators and board members strive to be thoughtful in determining the need for such actions.
As in the past, I’m mindful of communicating the wonderful things about the district in order to attract and retain families and other community members. I would like to see marketing and publicity about the things that make us great, doing so without negativity towards our neighboring districts. We could partner more directly and strongly with the City of Stoughton to consider housing and economic development so Stoughton is an attractive place for families with school age kids. We have held conversations with school families and should include others.
In my various professional roles as an educator I’ve developed a consultative approach based on asking questions and actively listening to the answers. I strive to be inclusive and informed while knowing there is always more to learn. I bring the same approach to my community roles: Trustee on the Stoughton Public Library Board, Co-planner of the last three Juneteenth celebrations, and Member of the City of Stoughton’s inaugural DEI taskforce. I am also the parent of two students in the district. Thus, I am deeply invested in the success of our schools at multiple levels.
