The Verona Common Council has focused on affordability by supporting new housing, the most effective way to moderate costs over time. The City Council has enabled growth through effective planning and zoning while balancing infrastructure, neighborhood input, and community values. Because Verona is such a desirable place to live, housing costs will remain a challenge, especially for renters and first time buyers. The Council approved a $1.2 million low interest loan to help redevelop a vacant commercial property into high quality, below market rental apartments to support community needs.
There is no simple formula for balancing these important considerations. These choices reflect community values as much as technical analysis. Each proposal before the council must be evaluated on its own merits. Public safety, especially for pedestrians, should remain the highest priority in shaping the built environment, including the continued expansion of sidewalks. Opportunities to add parks or green space are rare, and when they arise we should give them serious and careful consideration, recognizing they may not come again.
When I talk with residents, the strongest message I hear is that people value Verona’s quality of life and want us to protect what makes it special. My priority is to support our excellent core services like the library, senior services, public safety, and city operations while guiding growth in a thoughtful way that adds amenities and opportunity. The second consistent message I hear from constituents is that fiscal responsibility remains essential. I will continue to support careful budgeting, efficiency, and long term planning so Verona stays welcoming, vibrant, and affordable.
I have served on the City Council for nearly a year, gaining firsthand experience with how Verona operates and a deep respect for the professionals who serve our community through public safety, senior services, the library, and city operations. Serving on the Senior Services and Public Works committees has reinforced how much effective governance depends on supporting skilled staff. My background in engineering, business, and executive leadership helps me ask practical questions and weigh long term impacts. I have lived in Verona for 18 years, raised my family here, and use our schools, parks, trails, and local businesses regularly. I care deeply about Verona and want to help it continue to thrive.
