As Chair of the Personal Finance Committee I have looked at different ways to cut spending. I am looking at savings through a better healthcare contract, being careful on filling opened positions when retirements occur. Making departments justify a need to fill the newly-opened position. Also, looking at eliminating the duplication of services that can be done as efficiently by our purchase of service partners.
While I believe we are already doing a lot by having the affordable housing fund, there are market pressures, specifically in Madison, that make a large stock of housing untenable. The other issue on creating more housing outside of Madison, which is where the county board and the County Executive should focus our efforts, is transportation. It continues to be, the largest barrier to create more affordable units outside of Madison. I am glad that the communities bordering Madison are joining Madison Metro to give its citizens, more opportunities for housing options.
Access to quality services remains a priority, but affordability for residents of Dane County is paramount. During budget discussions, a Dane County Sheriff's deputy emphasized the need to maintain these vital services, but I took exception to the fact that they do not live, or pay taxes in Dane County which provides a career and an income for their family. This underscores the need to try to make the County affordable for all. I also have many constituents who prioritize our dedication to protecting the environment and being great stewards of the open spaces here.
As a long time supervisor and the current chair of the Personnel and Finance Committee, I have a vast knowledge of county government, its processes and practices. I believe we have a great work force that cares about the work that they do and the people they work for. As a person who also works in the private sector, I understand the pulls of day-to-day living in Dane County, which guides my thoughts and decisions.
