As a life long resident of Appleton, I have deep roots in this community. I feel District 8 has poor representation and currently needs a new voice.
Urban sprawl and rising tax base. There is a thoughtful and wise use of the finite land around us that requires careful planning from the city. I am hearing from many residents that they are stretched thin financially. The city needs to hold the line as best it can on the current tax base.
The leading role. Truth be told the wealthy have little issue with housing. People with disabilities, single parent homes, and 65 plus residents will be the largest groups struggling with housing. The city can absolutely plan and build with different family and individual needs in mind.
This is absolutely the best place to live in the United States. I have been around the country some and have seen multiple communities struggle with social disorder. We have a lot of good people in Appleton to start. When working with people a little empthy and listening is where we can improve.
People like parks, police services, community events, shelters for people struggling with housing, and many other services. The question is can we do it in a more affordable way? Is there a private partnership to help the city? Can new developments be multi-use to aid residents? Can we justify all new up coming expenditures on the city budget? It's about thoughtful planning.

I'm Patti Heffernan and I feel called to serve my community. This means collaborating with my whole community not just the people I like or agree with. After being an advocate for evidence based substance use legislation I realized government for the people by the people only works if the people show up. So I rolled up my sleeves. While this is only one way to serve my community I feel its an important one.
There are definitely more than 2 challenges in our community. I think one is making sure our neighbors are safe from violence and that laws are being evenly enforced to protect everyone no matter where you come from. Everyone, including law enforcement should be bound by law. I believe the transparency of our police dept has garnered some trust but we have a ways to go to nurture the trust in law enforcement as much has been eroded recently when it comes to the actions of ICE
The city has been working on a number of projects to get a variety of small apartments up to single family homes. I would love to see a way to get rental prices down but there are limits with what a city can do under current state laws. I would love to implement a proposal where we could limit or eliminate rental application fees. Our homeless population continues to grow we need to do more to remove barriers from people seeking housing.
In my opinion Appleton makes many efforts to be inclusive. In some areas for some groups. But we have a long way to go when it comes to looking at ourselves and where we fall short. Collectively there seems to be a tendency to move to a place of shame or defensiveness when hurts are brought up rather than taking an opportunity for reflection internally. This plays out collectively and is obvious to see when marginalized groups don't show up or engage. It's an indicator they don't feel welcome.
We are all paying taxes every time we turn around. No one wants to have to pay more than they should have to. Municipalities are limited with how they can structure tax payments. I welcome community input on what our residents want to see for our budget. I am happy to walk anyone through the city budget and bring questions forward as they come up.
