The role of a school board member is first and foremost about students. Every decision should support a safe/supportive learning environment with the teachers, programs, and resources students need to be prepared for life after graduation. That requires supporting and retaining strong staff and ensuring our district remains a place people want to work. Board members also serve as stewards of the community, balancing educational quality with transparency and responsible use of taxpayer resources.
Ensuring sufficient funding starts with responsible stewardship of local resources and transparency with the community. School boards must plan carefully, use funds efficiently, and be honest about costs. At the same time, state funding has not kept pace with inflation and rising student needs, increasing pressure on property taxes. I believe boards must also advocate at the state level for sustainable funding that reflects the real cost of educating students.
Educators should play the primary role in developing curriculum, drawing on their training, classroom experience, and knowledge of student needs. Mental health professionals also play an important role in shaping policies that support student well-being and address behavioral and emotional challenges. The board’s role is to set policy, listen to community input, and rely on professional expertise to make informed decisions that support students.
The district has taken multiple steps to improve school safety, including securing building entryways, updating safety policies, and hiring a former law enforcement officer in a role focused on safety and prevention. Officers are assigned to most schools, and staff receive training and guidance on emergency procedures. Ongoing collaboration with local law enforcement and attention to student mental health are also critical parts of prevention and preparedness.
Parents play an important role by sharing perspectives, raising concerns, and participating in open discussions about curriculum. That input matters and should be heard. At the same time, curriculum decisions should be informed primarily by the expertise of educators and other professionals. The board’s role is to weigh feedback from all stakeholders and set policy based on what best serves students.

A board member’s role is to provide guidance in running a school district, policy adoption to govern the district, and ensuring the superintendent of the district is upholding those policies. Individually, a board member can do nothing and has no power. It is only in working with fellow board members can any impact be made. I feel that prioritizing the education of the students in an equitable and fiscally responsible manner should be the focus.
School funding is decided at the state level, so advocating for funding from the legislature is important to ensure sufficient education funding. I participated at the Day At The Capitol during this last budget cycle, meeting directly with legislators that represent our district to advocate for our funding priorities. However, to provide property tax relief, the legislature needs to also increase state aid when funding increases are approved. Otherwise, those increases fall wholly on tax payers.
Most curriculum requirements are set by the state, which should include input from education and mental health professionals to ensure instructional requirements are based on evidence-based consensus best practice. For local curriculum decisions and policy adoptions, hearing from all stakeholders affected is paramount. Education and mental health professionals play a critical role in these decisions ensuring the intended outcome is achieved and to limit unforeseen consequences.
All schools have secure entrances, conduct mandatory safety drills annually, and our district created a District Safety Coordinator position to streamline and standardize our safety practices across the district. We are exploring a bag restriction at high schools to prevent students from carrying dangerous items while at school. Internally, my district looks to foster a feeling of community in the schools to promote accountability and positive relationships to hopefully limit internal conflict.
Much of the curriculum is mandated either via state statute or DPI. However, in instances where choice of curriculum is appropriate, communication to parents regarding the choices should be done to keep parents informed. We need parents to be a partner in the education of their child and good communication is the key to that partnership. With that said, one parent’s choice should not limit another parent’s choice when it comes to curricular decisions.

The role of a school board member is to help set direction, ensure accountability and safeguard taxpayer resources. As a board our priorities should be to prepare students for future success while being fiscally responsible and keeping the community informed.
I would focus on responsible budgeting first by focusing on classroom instruction and essential services to support our most vulnerable students. I would also review all programs and operations for efficiency. I’d also advocate for diversified funding through grants and partnerships where appropriate. If any additional funds are needed, I'd ensure the information is transparent, data driven and tied to student outcomes and long term financial stability.
Education and mental health professionals should play an important advisory role in shaping curriculum and school policies because they bring subject expertise and direct student experience. Their input should help guide evidence based decisions around instruction, student support, and wellness. Final decisions belong to the school board, which must balance expert guidance with community values, transparency, and accountability.
The district should take a prevention-focused approach that combines security, training, and student support. This should include controlled building access, regular safety drills, threat assessment teams, and close coordination with the local first responders. Along with safety, the district should also use mental health professionals to support students who may be at risk or going through a crisis to address concerns upfront.
Parents play an essential role in shaping their child's education and they should have clear visibility into what is being taught but this should not come to the detriment of other students opportunities to learn. Educators provide subject expertise, and the board sets standards and policy. The goal is a transparent, collaborative process that respects professional expertise while staying responsive to community input.
