School choice has created a new reality for public school districts in Florida. While families have the right to chose what is best for their students, it has left great financial hardship for all districts with declining enrollment. I support a wholistic view of our district and a strategic plan to maximize our dwindling resources in the best interest of our students. Currently, only two schools in our district have experienced increased enrollment over the past five years. We must ensure student success academically and safe facilities for all of our students and monitor enrollment closely to make the best decisions for our community.
All academic programs are essential as our primary goal is student achievement. Excessive administrative positions need to be cut a both the district and school levels and those resources need to be put toward additional teachers to reduce class size further, especially in our Title I schools.
Standardized test scores, high school graduation rates, and teacher retention rates are three metrics that should be prioritized when assessing whether students are being well served.
Reducing class size and increasing teacher salaries are two areas of focus that are crucial. Reduced class size would benefit our students and teachers allowing for greater individualized attention and less hardship on our teachers during the school day. Increasing teacher salaries would ensure our teachers know they are valued and allow them the opportunity to earn a livable wage in the profession they love. These two things are completely achievable if we would undertake a strategic downsizing of our district and faced the reality of the impacts of school choice.
