Dona Ana County Magistrate Judge Division 6
Magistrates are judges in limited jurisdiction courts. They hold the initial hearings in many types of serious criminal cases, and try criminal cases, including many first-time DUI/DWI and other misdemeanor cases which carry relatively less serious penalties. They also have jurisdiction over some types of civil cases (e.g., landlord/tenant and contracts) in which the amount sought is less than $10,000. Term: Four years; no term limits.

JANNETTE ALICIA MONDRAGON
(Dem)
If elected, what will you do to decrease the backlog of court cases?
What improvements, if any, are needed in the Magistrate Courts?
What skills and knowledge do you bring to the position?
There is currently no backlog of cases in our Magistrate Court. I will continue working efficiently and responsibly to ensure cases are resolved promptly while protecting every person’s right to a fair hearing.
Additional interpreters and staff would help cases move more efficiently, improve access to justice, and reduce unnecessary delays for litigants.
I bring extensive courtroom and legal experience as a Magistrate Judge, former Senior Assistant District Attorney, immigration attorney, and Child Support Enforcement Attorney. As the first Native American judge to serve in the Third Judicial District, I understand the law, the courtroom, and the importance of treating every person with fairness and respect.
