A good prosecutor must seek justice by tempering zeal with human kindness, striking hard blows against violent crime when needed, holding people accountable for their actions, and maintaining safety as well as law and order in the community. I believe that I am that person. I am seeking this office because I am the most qualified, experienced, and dedicated person to serve our community as Prosecuting Attorney. I have spent the past 22 years of my life prosecuting violent crime and holding people accountable for their actions. I have a wealth of institutional knowledge that I use on a daily basis as your Prosecutor. I believe that I am uniquely qualified to be re-elected as Prosecuting Attorney.
As Prosecuting Attorney, I intend to continue to seek and attain justice in criminal investigations and cases. The US Supreme Court has said "in a criminal prosecution is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done. As such, he is in a peculiar and very definite sense the servant of the law, the twofold aim of which is that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer." Secondly, I intend to keep the community safe by holding criminals accountable for their actions. Without accountability there can be no justice. Finally, I intend to maintain law and order in our community. We are a nation built upon laws. If those laws are not enforced then our civilized society will quickly spiral into anarchy and chaos.
The decision to charge someone with is a crime is the sole decision of the Prosecuting Attorney. The charging decision must be based upon whether there is sufficient evidence to prove the allegations, what potential charges are appropriate given the facts, and what potential charges would best serve the interests of justice. In making a charging decision, the prosecutor should keep in mind the power he or she is exercising. The magnitude of the charging decision does not dictate that it be made timidly, but it does dictate that it should be made wisely with the exercise of sound professional judgment. The attainment of justice, the safety of the community, and maintaining law and order are the paramount concerns of the Prosecutor.
I have over 22 years of experience in practicing criminal law. I have experience in taking every type of case to trial: from a speeding ticket to murder. Although I stopped counting a long time ago, I have tried well over 100 felony jury trials throughout my career. My family law experience consists of representing the State of Indiana in collecting delinquent child support on behalf of children and their custodial parents here in Delaware County.
I know times can be tough. I know that it takes a lot of resources to raise a child. All of this is especially true, when there are multiple children and the custodial parent may have to work more than one job to make ends meet. There is a reason that the law requires non-custodial parents pay child support. It takes two people to make a child therefore two people must contribute to the upbringing of that child. My office can and will help a custodial parent establish paternity and establish a child support order. After that, we can and will make sure that the noncustodial parent consistently pays support pursuant to the court order. We have various tools in our tool belt to enforce the child support order.
