I currently serve on the Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees and I am knowledgeable of the duties of a public school trustee. One of the fundamental responsibilities is to adopt policy for the district. Governance is the act of making decisions that provide direction, define expectations, grant power and authority, and evaluate outcomes.
Teaching is an honorable profession and the financial compensation should be commensurate with the profession. Educating & developing students is the primary role of a public school educator. My approach as a school trustee is also to provide the cultural support every teacher needs to effectively fulfill their role. A proper learning environment is also essential to student success. All of these factors are important in attracting & retaining the best teachers and staff.
We have yet to see the full impact that ESAs will have on Mesquite ISD, but we are budgeting for decreased student enrollment and decreased state revenue.
Attendance is decreasing, as is the case in most Texas public schools. When ADA (average daily attendance) decreases, state funding decreases. The basic allotment (BA) of $6,160 per student has not increased since 2019, but inflation has increased significantly. Using accurate calculations, the Texas legislature should have provided a $1,300 increase to the BA. but instead opted for a paltry increase of only $55 per student. This inadequate lack of funding makes the future expected level of service for public education unsustainable.
I support all the current policies, procedures, and guidelines of Mesquite ISD to protect students and employees from discrimination.
The major focus of our superintendent, staff, and Board of Trustees is to provide the resources necessary for increased student achievement and development. We all have the desire for our students to excel and to be a positive influence in society.

One of my platform pillars is Empowered Teachers, Inspired Students. - Developing and retaining the best educators. Sometimes it's not about the money. As a principal, I implemented innovative programs that promoted self development, teacher recognition without impacting the budget. One of my key observances on the campuses was that it was not always about the money.
Yes. Mesquite ISD is experiencing significant enrollment declines linked to, among other factors, expanded school choice options and families leaving for private or homeschooling. Real Choice Requires Real Quality: "True 'choice' shouldn't mean abandoning our public schools. It should mean making Mesquite ISD so exceptional that every family chooses to be here."
Yes and Yes. Enrollment in the district has dropped by approximately 4,000 students over the past eight years. Mesquite ISD is facing a difficult transition. A $24 million budget gap has forced the district to plan for more than 500 staff reductions next year, an effort to balance the budget as enrollment numbers shift.
