The redistricting debacle this year was unacceptable. Despite an overwhelming vote by the people and multiple Ohio Supreme Court rulings ordering fair maps, the redistricting committee chose to run out the clock, waste millions of taxpayer dollars on a second primary, and force the use of gerrymandered maps. When I am elected, I will support measures to enforce the will of Ohioans and penalize further delays. We cannot have fair elections without fair maps.
The State Legislature’s role in education should be to ensure that Ohio schools are nationally competitive and provide a sound and thorough education to all students. Well-designed curriculum is a top priority for me—and has been the focus of my career for over a decade. I believe it is essential to keep highly politicized and poorly constructed bills such as House Bill 616, which threatens the quality of curriculum in Ohio, from passing.
First, I would support revisiting HB-99, the new Ohio law that allows teachers to carry loaded, concealed firearms in the classroom without informing parents—and without what I consider vitally necessary hours of training. The bill is irresponsible and should never have passed. I would also support common sense measures for universal background checks, raising the minimum age for purchasing certain gun types, and any additional measures with proven track records for decreasing the likelihood of school shootings. Apart from guns, because safety is multifaceted, I would oppose legislations like HB-616 (Ohio’s education censorship bill) and HB-151 (Ohio’s “save” women’s sports bill that would subject young girls to inappropriate and unnecessary genital exams) because both would harm children.
Reproductive healthcare should be between a person and their doctors. Extreme anti-abortion legislation will kill people and run families and businesses out of Ohio. The horror stories have already begun with the six-week ban. In addition, my opponent has co-sponsored House Bill 480, a full abortion ban that also jeopardizes contraceptives and fertility treatments. I will do everything in my power to stop this bill and any legislation like it.
I support efforts to develop renewable energy sources in Ohio, and feel these efforts are essential in the battle against the impacts of climate change. When I am in office, I will seek expert opinions and assistance to develop policy in this area. I think the best thing policymakers can do is to listen to and support the scientists.
