Twenty-five years of experience managing processes, projects, products, programs, and people in the financial services industry prepared me for the duties of county council member. Furthermore, I graduated in 2022 with a bachelor’s in Legal Studies (pre-law) with a minor in Political Science (4.0 GPA) and look forward to the practical application of my studies as I work to change the unfair rules.
The county should create a task force to increase the supply of affordable housing. This task force would be charged with identifying the root cause(s) of the lack of affordable housing. Without addressing the problem at its root, it will recur. This task force will identify actions to be taken and the county would be responsible for securing grants for these initiatives. The task force would be comprised of county employees, business owners, landlords, vacant property owners, and citizens.
First, the county will consider incentives for businesses, and larger incentives for businesses owned by women, people of color, and those of the LGBTQIA+ community. Next, a task force will study the current state and make recommendations to improve development and job growth at all economic levels. This would include the Chamber of Commerce, county employees, state agencies, local corporations, small businesses, and citizens. Finally, the county must adequately fund our public schools.
The county should create a task force to address drug abuse a new way since current initiatives have been ineffective. The root cause must be addressed, or the problem will recur. Therefore, another task force would be needed to study the root cause(s) of drug abuse. It will make recommendations and the county will secure grants for these initiatives. The task force would include the health department, local non-profits, healthcare providers, public safety officers, and citizens.
1- Close the chasm that persists between the people and their elected representatives in County Council. People must be able to voice their opinions about local issues, trust that they will be heard, and that their council member will represent their interests in council.
2-Abolish At-Large voting and allow district residents to elect their council member.
3-Limit the power of the County Executive that has unilateral control of the county's finances with no checks and balances.
The decisions made in county council affect our diverse population. My personal experiences have helped me understand the needs of families, widows, single moms, grandparents, single career women, and those retired. I have had all those titles. In addition, I am a recently retired Registered Nurse who worked with special needs children and the elderly.
Our county government should look at encouraging new small businesses and job creation. We need jobs that pay well enough for citizens to afford the housing that is already available.
Encouraging citizens to shop at local businesses and lowering taxes stimulates economic growth.
We need to enforce the laws to prosecute those bringing drugs into our county.
Cut taxes for our hard-working families and small businesses. Protect our U.S. Constitutional rights and freedoms by supporting our First and Second Amendment rights. Keep us safe by supporting our law enforcement.
