I’m running for office because I am deeply dedicated to my community and passionate about making a difference. I bring motivation, empathy, and a solution-driven mindset to the table. My skills in listening, strategizing, mediating, and advocating for what's right have been proven through my actions in standing up against unjust situations in our town. I thrive on multitasking and am committed to showing up for Highland Park, attending Borough events, and staying informed about local issues so I can provide the answers people need. With years of involvement in Highland Park, including my role as chair of the Human Relations Commission and as a member of the Highland Park Democratic Committee, I have a strong foundation in community service. My past work on the Mayor’s Equity Advisory Council and the Main Street Highland Park board reflects my love for this town and my desire to see it thrive as an accepting, diverse, and economically successful place.
My priorities are helping to build bridges between diverse communities and underrepresented voices. I'd like to increase civic engagement in the youth community and the Asian, Black and Latinx community. It is vital for the youth in our community, no matter their culture, race, language barriers, religion, or gender - to be involved in civic matters that will invariably affect their civil rights and safety. Additionally, I'd love to see redevelopment happen in Highland Park which includes much needed affordable housing and the revitalization of our downtown
When discussing difficult issues with the community, especially those with significant costs or side effects, it's important to be transparent and honest about the challenges while framing the conversation around shared values like safety, health, or long-term benefits. I would emphasize the power of collective action and the positive impact that the community can achieve together, using inclusive and accessible language that focuses on gains rather than losses. I’d be empathetic to their concerns and listen but also be direct in representing what is good and fair for the collective benefit of the greater community.
When disagreements arise among groups of residents, on any number of topics, it is crucial to go beyond listening and moderation. Finding common ground on which to find compromise is vital for a thriving community. Someone is going to be upset, but being transparent and direct is something most people appreciate even when the solution is not in their favor. Most people want to live harmoniously and safely and they care about their neighbors. Fostering unity such as holding events and opportunities for constituents to engage socially rather than when a negative situation emerges, will lead to less tense situations and better understanding.
As a current chair of the Human Relations Commission in Highland Park, I would like to encourage more residents to volunteer on town boards and commissions. These roles allow community members to actively contribute to local improvements in services, safety, education, and community engagement. This type of participation fosters collaboration between residents and government, directly impacting the quality of life. Further, to enhance engagement, it’s essential to explore innovative ways of communicating about local services, events, and opportunities, ensuring everyone stays informed and connected. Finally, by identifying root causes affecting families and intentionally aligning services to support them, we can help propel families and children toward a successful future, building a stronger, more engaged community.
