My name is Daniel Fleming, 67, of Van Buren Township, and I am seeking reelection as a Library Trustee. I have been married to my wife, Nancy, for 44 years, and we have two grown sons, Scott and Cole, both graduates of local universities.

I have proudly called the Belleville area home for nearly 57 years.

Four generations of my family, including my grandmother, mother, myself, and my children, graduated from Belleville High School. I hold a bachelor’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University in Business and Public Health & Safety. I retired from General Motors in 2019 after 38 years, where I served as a Pre-Production Launch Manager. I enjoy traveling, camping, birding, and spending time with family and friends.

I would bring a deep commitment to our community, along with a broad range of skills and experience, to my role as Library Trustee. If reelected, I will work diligently to support the Belleville Library and the surrounding communities it serves. I am committed to listening to residents, supporting lifelong learning, and helping ensure our library continues to be a valuable resource for everyone.

I live in Van Buren Township with my family, and the Belleville Area District Library is part of our everyday life. I’m an avid reader and active in local and library book clubs. I love seeing the sense of awe when someone discovers everything the library offers—books, movies, programs, study spaces, and technology. I’m running for the Library Board to help keep our Belleville, Van Buren, and Sumpter communities connected to a welcoming, inspiring, and accessible library. I bring experience working with budgets and tax dollars, partnering with local groups and schools, and supporting literacy and lifelong learning. If elected, I will focus on strong print and digital collections, responsible stewardship, and engaging programs for all ages.

Our library is more than shelves of books; it’s where many of us borrow e-books and audiobooks, use online resources, and access technology we may not have at home. Demand for digital media is rising, and so are licensing costs, while we still must support print collections, public computers, Wi-Fi, and other tools people rely on. If elected, I’ll support cost-effective purchasing, partnerships, and grants to keep digital access strong without cutting other services. I’ll keep investing in print books and in-person programs that make the Belleville library and Sumpter branch feel like a second home. I’ll also focus on careful budgeting and outside funding so our tri community library can grow while respecting local priorities.

I have been a reader my whole life; from my days going to the book mobile in the summers as a child to continuing to read for my work as a student and an educator. Now, I read for pleasure and knowledge in the book clubs I belong to. I attend gardening classes, movie nights, jazz performances and much more and in doing so I have seen how our Belleville Area District Library has become a community hub that provides many social and educational opportunities for all. It has been a privilege to be on the BADL board and I hope to continue to serve my community.

I would like to continue to serve as vice-president of the board and as a member of its various committees. I particularly want to continue on the Outreach Committee in order to bring the many library services to our patrons.
