Enrollment at CMU is down, and the University is experiencing financial challenges. How would you, as an elected official, address the impact of fewer students and fewer university employees supporting our community?

What do you see as the most pressing needs for infrastructure or capital projects in the township?

Regarding CMU, the township board and management staff must try to fully understand the corresponding economic effects this will have on its revenues. I would establish a regularly scheduled calendar to meet with the University to understand the steps and plan being taken by the University to improve on this reduction in students. It is imperative we are in sync with the University's plans and identify ways and actions we can take to assist in their success.
The most important infrastructure and service for the citizens and township operations is supporting and maintaining the freshwater delivery and wastewater systems to assure their consistent reliability. It is costly but necessary to assure we meet all regulatory requirements and produce a safe high quality delivery of these services. My next priority is to extend our walkable/bikeable pathways into additional neighborhoods and commercial areas and assure they are maintained for year round use.

The appropriate response to this issue will need to be multifaceted. Enrollment at institutes of higher learning is down nationwide, indicating that it is not isolated to Mt. Pleasant or Union Township. It would be in the best interest of this community to continue to provide the support the University needs to make CMU a desirable destination for those who are seeking a location for their education, while diversifying our local economy by growing local business and industry.
High speed internet is critical to the future development of Union Township; yet many in our community do not have access to broadband or fiber internet. Improving our internet infrastructure will provide additional accessibility for people who live here, offering opportunities for education and employment, as well as making the community attractive for potential transplants looking for new surroundings while working remotely.
